ROADSHOW INVENTORY |
If a road has been surveyed using the Roadshow digital video system; an inventory database can be populated with inventory items and attributes directly extractable from the digital video. The interrogation/extraction software is simple to operate and the outputs are in standard database format, making the outputs compatible with most GIS & PMS packages in use today (HAPMS, UKPMS, Confirm etc). The viewing and extraction software can be operated on a standard multimedia PC running Windows 95, 98, 2000, XP & Vista. The system gives instant access to high-definition; geospatially referenced digital images (up to 2560x1080) with assets selectable from a list, from a map, by grid reference or from node referenced chainage. The required descriptions and parameters are stored in a format compatible with RMMS. Output data formats are client specified and to date we have successfully exported to Exor, Confirm, HAPMS & UKPMS. The positional accuracy of the extracted information can be given to +/- 2m in chainage, which can be reduced to sub-metre accuracy through the use of DGPS. In terms of the on screen measurement facility, this can measure the dimension and height/width of inventory items to within 10% accuracy. Features such as signs, bridges, carriageways, footways, culverts, line markings, lamp posts and traffic islands can be extracted from the digital video footage and the relevant information stored by way of a user-friendly digital data input form. |
The end user may then either have an inventory, to any specification, extracted by our experienced staff or alternatively can opt for the facility to enable their own staff to extract, measure and populate the relevant inventory items & attributes as they wish, ready for export. This facility is fully supported by our technical staff and systems experts. Recently Impulse Geophysics were commissioned by Sheffield City Council to undertake a Roadshow Inventory survey of their entire network (circa 2,600km) for the purposes of setting up their PMS & populating it with a full asset inventory as part of their PFI requirements. |
Roadshow Inventory Survey Procedure DGPS referenced digital video data collection uses between one and five; high-definition, progressive scan, digital video cameras to provide the following: High-Definition (HD) digital video images of at least 1920x1080 resolution collected to achieve the necessary balance of high-resolution imaging for inventory purposes, whilst ensuring that each frame can be interrogated as a whole single image in its entirety on a standard resolution monitor. The high-definition digital video images are spatially referenced every 2 metres with accompanying GPS positions ‘stamped’ on them. This will is achieved by using a combination of Trimble DGPS and an optical distance measuring device, which is used for the purposes of dealing with any potential signal dropouts in built up areas. The use of sophisticated lighting filters ensures that issues such as bright sun light and dull grey weather will not have a detrimental affect on image quality. Surveys are planned in such a way, so as to ensure that during data collection, as far as possible, the sun will remain behind the vehicle and that the primary view (forward) will be unaffected in any case. The video images are provided in a proprietary format known as VJPs (Video Jpegs) and these are optimised for interrogation, image-enhancement, zooms, random access to maps etc. They are viewable on any standard Windows running PC with no need for any specialist hardware. The interrogation software that the video images are provided in is absolutely LICENSE-FREE, so you will not be locked/limited by furtive and expensive software licensing issues. Having continuous running high-resolution digital video frames at 2 metre spacing, ensures that in-frame measurements and booking of inventory items can be done close in the field thus ensuring greater accuracy. Measurements are only recommended to a maximum of 10 metres into the field; and this ensures that locational accuracy will be within a metre and dimensional measurements to within 10%. The video images are supplied in our latest interrogation interface (video browser) which is the fully-interactive, multi-functional RoadShow Inventory package (a map based user friendly package which enables detailed interrogation of the video – Demo disc available on request). As well as displaying the video frames in 4 different sizes; from thumb nail to full resolution, it allows high-speed playback (equivalent to 200 mph) or a slow methodical frame by frame playback for the purposes of detailed analysis. It incorporates both line measurement and point to point measurement tools along with image enhancement/sharpen, smart zoom and ‘flip-reverse’ feature. The interrogation and extraction tools are simple to operate and the outputs are in standard database format, making the outputs compatible with all GIS & PMS packages in use today. Once the standard CSV database has been populated then the specific export takes place, directly uploading the information to the particular PMS. The client may either choose to use its own inspectors to extract data from the video or alternatively use our bureau service to undertake the extraction and populate the inventory database. We have a fleet of 6 dedicated survey vehicles and have a proven track record of delivering large projects on time and within budget. Collecting the data, processing it and presenting it in our own license-free bespoke interrogation software. We have an in-house bureau service for extraction of inventory data and extensive experience in working with GIS and PMS systems. |
