Impulse Radar Autocalibration represents a new era in non-destructive pavement investigation.
The system was developed by Impulse Geophysics for the purpose of high speed impulse radar
road investigation to image the subsurface pavement structure to find the thickness,
construction types and changes and anomalies, without disruption to traffic flow. Major
advances in the technique were possible through innovative software which was developed
in-house by Impulse Geophysics.

This allows impulse radar surveys to be carried out without the requirement of coring for
calibration purposes. The Autocalibration system continuously monitors the calibration velocity
thereby negating the need for cores. Cores are only required for accurate identification of
material types. The technique has been tried and tested by the UK Highways Agency.
V (calibration velocity) is
calculated ever 0.25m along
the road and averaged to
reduce error
